Aguero Targets Champions League Glory After Achieving Premier League Landmarks

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has set his sights on achieving UEFA Champions League glory this season after reaching two Premier League landmarks in the 6-1 win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The 31-year-old Argentina international was at his ruthless best at Villa Park as his three-goal haul took him above Alan Shearer as the player with the most Premier League hattricks on 12.

Aguero’s goals also took him above former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry as the foreigner with the most goals in Premier League history with 176 strikes.

The former Atletico Madrid striker is now level with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard as the joint-fourth top scorer in the league’s history with Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer the only men above him in that category.

Aguero has won every major honour in English football since moving to the Etihad Stadium in 2011 but one trophy that has eluded him so far is the Champions League.

The furthest City have gone in the competition during Aguero’s time at the club was the semi-finals in 2016 under Manuel Pellegrini.

With Liverpool holding a seemingly insurmountable lead at the top of the table, Aguero would be glad to add the Champions League to the City trophy cabinet with a last 16 date with Real Madrid to come next month.

"I want to keep scoring more goals but it all depends on my team-mates. If he passes to me it's fine," he told Sky Sports, speaking alongside Riyad Mahrez, who scored twice as Villa were put to the sword.

"Normally, I don’t think how many years [I would] be here in one club. When I came here, the club and my team-mates received me very well - in that moment with Mancini.

"I adapted very well. Keep going now.

"I want to keep scoring, keep focused every game. I will be happy if we do a good Champions League."

Aguero has scored 13 goals in 16 Premier League games this season.
